The Kent Tesco Girls Cup finals were held in Canterbury on Sunday, where Meridian U-14s and Hugin Vikings U-16s were the winners. The U-14 final was first up and although Ebbsfleet started the quickest and spent some time in their opponents' half, it was Meridian that broke away and forced in the opener. The second half was end to end but Meridian scored a second. Ebbsfleet then pushed forward and managed to reduce the arrears, setting up a tense final few minutes. But as Ebbsfleet pushed forward, Meridian broke away and scored a third goal. In the U-16 final, Castle Colts met Hugin Vikings and with the two teams placed first and second in their league, a keenly contested final was anticipated. The game was end to end to start with but then Hugin had a sustained period of pressure and took the lead. Castle Colts worked hard and scored an equaliser but Hugin's front two players were really quick and the Vikings scored two more goals before half-time. The second half continued in the same vain, with Castle pushing forward and Hugin then breaking quickly. More goals for Hugin followed and the final score was 6–1. Liz Symons, Women and Girls Football Development Officer for Kent FA, said both finals were really good to watch with all teams playing some good football. The two winning teams now go on to represent Kent in the South East Regional finals on April 17th at Roehampton. |

31/01/2010 No revenge for City Women
City Women 2 Haywards Heath 4Having been beaten 10-0 by Haywards Heath only three weeks previously, City could take some satisfaction from giving their visitors to Canterbury High School far more competition this time round. Not that any of them looked in the least bit happy after another match in which they played a lot of well organised football but failed to take their chances. Hopes were high after City took a twenty-third minute lead following a period of end to end football that saw Jemma Roberts drift a high shot into the top netting, Vicky Fusco shoot a fraction wide and goalkeeper Chloe Franklin made several important saves. When Fusco hit a shot hard into the Haywards Heath defence the ball rebounded for Amy Belsey to take City into the lead. But ten minutes later Haywards Heath put the City defence under pressure from a centre and, in trying to clear City deflected the ball into their own net. With Jenny Collins struggling after an injury picked up in the warm up, City's defence never looked comfortable. They conceded another goal when giving the visitors a lot of space but shortly before half-time Avril Spary equalised after a well worked City move. Haywards Heath put pressure on in the opening minutes of the second half and chipped the ball over Franklin to go ahead. City brought on Hannah Gardner, who contributed some clever footwork on the right side, but City could not turn possession into goals. Fusco had a great chance but hit her shot over the top. Franklin continued to keep City in sight of a point but in the end Haywards Heath put the outcome beyond them with a successful long shot. CITY: Franklin; Baker, Collins, Munday, Fagg. Blackmore, Roberts, Bailey, Spary, Fusco, Belsey. Sub: Gardner |

England's sand stars train in Canterbury
England Head Coach, Terry Bowes, held his first England training session last Sunday at Canterbury’s Body and Mind Leisure Club, recruiting the top talent from around the Country. England Beach Soccer (EBS) and the Body and Mind Leisure Club have very recently forged a relationship that will see the club become the training base for the national team. John Hawkins Chief Executive of EBS said "The facilities here are outstanding for beach sports and the level of interest already shown in what is a new sport in England has been very exciting. Together I'm certain we will be delivering some top class national and international events, and I'm sure it won't be long until we welcome our first Canterbury based player into the England squad". Lee Whatman, Centre Manager at Body and Mind Leisure Club, were also quick to express their excitement about the continued growth of beach soccer in the local region "We are extremely excited to be involved with such an exciting sport such as beach soccer and proud to closely affiliated to a national team." Players as far as Liverpool attended Kent's only urban sand pitch in the attempt to make it into Terry’s first team squad. Also on hand to identify emerging England Beach Soccer talent was one of Tottenham Hotspur’s leading scouts, Carl Dixon. "It was great to have Carl there" said England’s Head Coach "his knowledge of football particularly on the technical side is second to none. Having decent technical ability is a big part of being a good beach soccer player and being able to get Carl’s insight on the players in attendance was a massive bonus" With such an array of gifted beach soccer players emerging in England, Terry Bowes will certainly have a hard time deciding on his 10 man team for the trip to the Canary Islands. The event will play host to some of the top beach soccer nations, including, Spain, Switzerland and Germany. "The competition for places has increased dramatically which can only beneficial for England" Bowes said “I intend to take this team to the next level. To have so many quality players at my disposal is not only important for the continued development of the team but also shows how far the sport has progressed. I will certainly have a tough decision in selecting my squad." If you are interested in getting involved with Beach Soccer then please visit our website: www.englandbeachsoccer.com |
