Aug 08 - Sitting Volleyball

The Saudi National Sitting Volleyball team

The Saudi National Sitting Volleyball team came to England at the end of August to take part in a number of competitions and help raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital all in the space of three days.

The showpiece match of the weekend's events saw a SE & London Select VI take on the Saudi Arabian National team on Sunday morning (17th August). The SE & London Select side included GB Captain’s Robbie Barratt and Sarah Pegg with fellow GB side members Robert Richardson and Mustaffa Jabbar, with the latter in particular being in imperious form.

The side proved too strong for the Saudi team, running out winners in three sets, 25/10, 25/18, 25/15. It gave spectators and players alike the opportunity to get a feel for how Sitting Volleyball is played at the highest level with some fantastic rallies and powerful hitting by both sides.

The showpiece match capped off a fantastic weekend of Sitting Volleyball in Canterbury, where players had been treated to a great presentation on Strength and Conditioning work by Olympic Bronze medallist, Ian Wynne on Saturday (16th August), as well as a round robin tournament in which the side led by GB Sitting Volleyball coach Josef Banfi - the Kent Oranjebums - narrowly took the title.

The weekend provided a great platform for English and Saudi Arabian set-ups to continue their strong relationship and large thanks must go in particular to all squads taking part including, The Kent ‘Orangibums’, London Lynx and Kent Fire and Rescue Service, as well as Body and Mind Member, Tom Middleton for putting together such a well run occasion.
